The European Commission announced that it will allocate EUR 125 million to finance measures to support the fruit and vegetable sector to offset the Russian embargo on exports of European agri-food products.

This measure will benefit in concrete products such as tomatoes, carrots, peppers, cauliflower, cucumbers, berries, apples, pears, table grapes, kiwis, among others, today unveiled the Commission.

Brussels justifies supporting these foods because they are in “full time” and “there is no storage option for most of them,” then Russia has closed its market to European food products as retaliation for economic and financial sanctions on some Russian sectors.

“There is no immediately available alternative market”, adds the European executive.

This aid package will include measures such as the removal of market production, as well as compensation to producers not to spoon or scoop before maturation of foods.

“Given the market situation in the wake of restrictions on agricultural exports from the European Union, with effect from today, declare these emergency measures to reduce the overall supply a number of products from fruit and vegetables, at a time when there is excessive pressure on prices in the coming months, “said Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

He added that: “All farmers of the affected products – whether in organizations or not – will be eligible to receive these supports. Act immediately will enable effective support price paid to producers in the domestic market, helping the industry to adjust. “
