At the end of December there were 306,062 people receiving unemployment benefits, 70,860 less than in the previous year and less than 663 people in November. The figures were released on Friday by the Social Security Institute and show that more than 57% of the 713,700 unemployed calculated by the National Statistics Institute (INE) do not have access to these benefits.

The Social Security numbers include unemployment benefits, social allowance of initial unemployment, the subsequent social benefit and the extension of unemployment assistance who are paid to unemployed persons are registered at employment centers and meet the legal requirements for access.

With reference to the number of subscribers in November in job centers, the subsidies coverage rate is 51%. But if we look at the total number of unemployed registered by INE in November, these benefits reach only 43% of the unemployed, leaving out more than half of those who say they have no job.

The Port is the district where the number of beneficiaries with unemployment benefits was higher, having been awarded grants to 64 283 people. Following are the districts of Lisbon (59 650), Setubal (26,113) and Braga (24 757).

The subsidized unemployed received in December 2014 the lowest benefits of the last four years (compared to the same months). According to the data now released, each person received 462.6 euros per month, less than 15.5 euros in 2013. Compared to November the average value of benefits increased by less than 60 cents.

The reduction in the number of subsidized is in a counter with rising unemployment verified by INE in the last months of last year, but seems to go in the same direction of decreasing the number of registered at employment centers .
