Former Greek finance minister is sentenced to probation – China Radio International

Former Finance Minister of Greece, George Papaconstantinou, was sentenced on Tuesday (24) to one year in prison, suspended for three years for forgery of a list of tax evasion guilty during his tenure between October 2009 and June 2011.

In 2010, Christine Lagarde, the then Minister of Finance of France, gave the Greek government a list, which involves over two thousand Greeks with accounts in the Swiss branch of the British private bank HSBC, on suspicion of tax evasion. Papaconstantinou was alleged to have removed the names of three relatives of the list.

A special court in Athens, the Greek capital, began to hear the case since February this year. When was heard in court, George Papaconstantinou denied the charges and claimed that it is a victim of political and corrupt officials.
