Unemployment is stabilizing below 12%. Continuing a downward path, June was the third consecutive month in which the unemployment rate calculated by the National Statistics Institute (INE) fell short of that bar.

The provisional INE figures, released this quinta- Monday, indicate that the unemployment rate in June was 11.2%, the same value obtained for May (after review) and significantly below the 12.3% rate recorded in June 2015. in April, the rate had been 11.6%.

After a peak of over 17% in the first months of 2013, the monthly unemployment rate has been falling. Since April this year that it is below 12%, something that had not happened since April 2010. It is necessary to go back to November 2009 to find a value for May and June.

The INE also gives account of a breach of the unemployed population. Last month, there were 568,800 unemployed people in Portugal, four thousand than in May and 62,500 less than in June 2015. The number of employed persons was 4,532,000, which represents a slight increase over May (more 7700 persons) and an increase of 41,500 people compared to the same month last year

the unemployment rate therefore follows the same trend as another indicator used to assess the health of the labor market.: the number of people registered in the employment centers. Late last month, total enrollment fell to the lowest since September 2009, has also retreated 4.4% from May. They were in all 511,642 people (which, from October, will no longer have to present every two weeks).

The unemployment among young people are, as usual, much higher than the total population. The provisional estimate for the youth unemployment rate (people between 15 and 24 who are in the labor market) is 27.2%, down from 28.1% in May and 31.8% in June 2015 . INE recorded last month 99,000 unemployed youth. Were 102,300 in May and 114,800 in June 2015. On the other side of the spectrum, the adult unemployment (between 25 and 74 years) was 9.9% in the same amount than in the previous month.

Already unemployed rates between men and women were more distant. For men, the indicator fell in June by 0.2 percentage points to 10.9%, while that of women rose 0.1 points to 11.5%.

The calculated rate for June could still change. Monthly disclosures of the NSA unemployment rate concern not only the month in question, but before the quarter focused this month – that is, the data June concern May, June and July (for the most recent month, values they are calculated by projection). The figures are published in provisional form and then revised. INE had a month ago reported a provisional value of 11.6% in May. But the data now published, that figure was revised, with the final rate to be 0.4 percentage points lower. Last year, a downward revision also the month of May, which showed a discrepancy of 0.8 percentage points, became a passionate debate on the eve of elections.
