Medina promises improvements in Rails already in 2017 – the Public.en

The city of Lisbon is prepared "to manage well," Carris, "it will be a company that is financially stable," and "to ensure a better service to citizens". The warranty is given by the president of the municipality, which believes that users will feel improvements "already in the first half of 2017", although "to recover the transport system" to be a work of years."

Fernando Medina spoke at the signing of the memorandum of understanding of the new model of management of the company, whose ownership and management are transferred to the municipality on 1 January 2017. "This is without a doubt a historic day for the city and for the camera because the Rails returns to the house," he said, referring to the fact that in the past the company had already been owned by the municipality, a reality that changed with the nationalization, in 1975.

"We are fully aware of what it means to the service of public transport," added the mayor who is a socialist, stressing that this "is not a service that can be, by definition, profitable". In this sense, he explained, the camera will assume "the annual funding of the needs of the public service" of the Rails.

To this end, he reminded, will be allocated to revenues from parking, fines and the Single Tax Movement, funds that the camera will focus on a Background of Urban Mobility. In the Budget of the municipality for 2017 (which will be discussed this Tuesday in the Municipal Assembly of Lisbon) this fund will have a budget of 15 million euros.

At the ceremony held at the Museum of the Rails, Alcantara, Fernando Medina assured that the company will be allocated "the revenue that is necessary to develop the strategy that was outlined by the municipality. This, needed, without that the company return "to debt, historical past, and without re "a situation of underfunding".

"With the Chamber of Lisbon there will be no privatisation or concession to private parties. Not for ideological prejudice, but because we know that only we will be able to recover today the Rails," said still, speaking in a "new cycle in the life of the company."

Already the historical debt of the Rails, which is around 800 million euros, will be in the hands of the State. "The State does not do here any favors, because it remains responsible for that which is already responsible, which is the debt that you created," he said, in this respect the prime minister.

Underlining that the agreement now signed (which "puts an end to the litigation history between the State, the nationalized, and the city") "could already have been signed a few years ago", António Costa has argued that this not only happened in the Government of Passos Coelho by "extremism". Now, he praised, "good judgment prevailed over extremism".

"I’m sure that the city earns a lot from this", fired the prime minister, admitting that it has "some jealousy" by Fernando Medina. While he was the mayor of Lisbon, António Costa fought, without success, to which the Rails were municipalizada. Now leads the Government, that his ambition became a reality: "I have Changed my functions, but I didn’t change my ideas," quipped.

Already the minister of the Environment pointed out that what is intended with the municipalization of the company is a "strengthening of the offer" and an "improvement of the quality of the service". "It is important to act quickly," said Matos Fernandes, considering that this will help the new pricing for children and the elderly that have now been announced and which, according to forward Fernando Medina will enter into force in February of next year.
