Homes vacant: 20 cameras will be linked to triple in 2017 – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

Two dozen municipalities have already reported to the Tax and Customs Authority that they intend to triple the rate of IMI (municipal property tax) to the homes vacant or in ruins. This penalty will be felt by the owners already in 2017.

In response to the DN, official source of the Ministry of Finance has confirmed that “were identified by 20 cities buildings considered to be derelict for which it is intended, with reference to 2016, the application of the rate of IMI is highest at the triple”. Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, Sintra, Almada, and park rangers are some of the municipalities which will have this penalty.

As explained in the same newspaper, the decision on the application of this rate compounded is favored this year by the possibility of the identification of houses that are abandoned. Is that, “for the first time, the companies supplying water, electricity and gas are required to report to the local authorities a list of the absence of contracts for the supply or consumption very low”.

This measure, advocated by the Chambers as an instrument to foster the rehabilitation of buildings and the rental market is being contested by the associations of owners. They argue that many of these homes are in areas without demand, reporting that its members are being penalized because they could not rent a house.

on the other hand, as the Business reported on 12 December, in the election year of 2017, the mayors have decided to give a bonus to your voters and nearly a hundred will lower the rate of IMI. There is no rise in the face of the 2016, and almost half of the cameras opt for the minimum rate, 0.3%,
