Oak wants to research to the testing of fuel consumption of cars – Public.en

The chairman of Quercus said on Wednesday to Reuters that it will ask the european and national authorities that investigate "serious" report that indicates that the cars spend on average 42% more fuel than is advertised.

John White reacted well, in declarations to the Lusa agency, the conclusions of a report by the European Federation for Transport and Environment that indicates that the cars spend on average 42% more fuel than is advertised by the manufacturers, namely Mercedes Benz.

"We will ask the european authorities, namely the European Commission (EC), and to the national authorities for the type approval of vehicles to investigate this matter in a serious way, and extended to all manufacturers of automobiles, ‘ he said.

The chairman of Quercus said that you want to learn whether the manufacturers "are using devices that handle the results of laboratory or if the laboratory tests are to be properly drawn up and reflect after what will happen in the consumption".

"you need to know what is going on", he defended.

John White explained that the study is already done there three years, and compares the fuel consumption of the cars in real-life situations, in transit, with the consumption that is advertised by the manufacturers, and obtained through testing in the laboratory.

"The thing is, if it was found that the cars in real-life situations, in traffic, consume a lot more than what is advertised by the manufacturers and that is measured by them. In addition, this difference is increasing. In the last three years, these figures have been rising and this year reached values higher than the previous ones", he pointed out.

The responsible person stressed that in average the difference of the values is 42%, but there are brands that exceed 50%, as for example the Mercedes, with 54%, and some models arrive to 56%.

"what this means is that when a car is advertised as being the to spend six litres per 100 kilometres, it is actually to spend nine litres per 100. Therefore, it is to be an expense, an ignition and pollution that the citizen believed that there was not going to happen", he said.

In the opinion of the president of Quercus, the difference of the consumption "is inexplicable".

"Although there is no evidence, if we look at the values when they are suspicious that something is not right, therefore, has to be investigated by the competent authorities", he concluded.

The study Mind the Gap, of the European Federation of Transport and Environment, organization that integrates the association environmentalist, Portuguese Oak, it concludes that the difference between the actual consumption and the consumption advertised by the manufacturers is increasing.

"the difference between The results (on consumption and CO2 emissions) of the testing laboratory official and the actual performance of the cars has been growing: it increased from nine percent in 2001 to 28% in 2012 and 42% in 2015," concludes the study.
