“We were extraordinarily pleased, naturally,” says Francisco Veloso, director, Católica-Lisbon. The college has achieved the 23rd position of the ranking of the Financial Times, the best position ever attributed to a Portuguese institution. The one that claims to be “the school more international, the country” has entered the rankings in 2008.
With equal satisfaction have received the NEW School of Business and Economics the news. The college also is on the 23rd place in the list of Financial Times. Daniel Moth, the dean of the faculty, says that the institution has a strategy for which the position in the rankings is important, although it is not what we only move. “The fact that we climbed a few places in the ranking of the best schools, and we are now at the top ex-equo between the Portuguese schools is of course something that makes us happy and what makes us feel that our strategy is on the right path”, it gives.
Both colleges have reached the best classsificação ever. In the past year, the Catholic occupied the 26th place, and the New came in the 28th.
The Porto Business School and mark his presence in the ranking for the fifth consecutive year. “It is the sign of recognition of the work that has been done in the school, on the path of internationalization and executive education with more and more excellence”, says Patrícia Teixeira Lopes, director-assistant. The Porto Business School holds the 62nd position, and was the only Portuguese institution to rise in the category “Executive MBA”, which occupies the 54th place.
The idea of all these rankings is to focus very much on the ability of school must create a reality and a logic of international Francisco Veloso, the director of Católica-Lisbon
What’s the secret behind these colleges?
Francisco Veloso stresses three aspects that contribute to the prestige of the Catholic SBE: the consistency of the educational offer, the ability of the school to continue to assert itself on the logic of the international, and the fact that it will increasingly be recognized for its “ability to lead and contribute from an intellectual point of view”.
“The idea of all these rankings is to focus very much on the ability of school must create a reality and a logic of international” – says the director of the Catholic. The faculty, according to its own, it offers 40% of teachers of international career, and about half of the students in the classroom from the 2nd cycle of Higher Education are sourced foreign.
In the same logic international, Católica SBE also has a number of international partners, including in Europe, North America and South America.
in Relation to the third aspect, Francisco Veloso says that his faculty has been affirming itself in terms of research. “We were the only Portuguese university present on the WebSummit with our project Patient Innovation, which connects innovation in the area of health with the role of patients as innovators” – refers to. In the words of the director, this international visibility helps to explain the ability of asserting the quality and the recognition of the institution.
The people are the decisive factor and distinctive of the Porto Business School. Patricia Lopes emphasizes first, “a faculty of excellence”, where the concern rests with the academic rigor, the connection with the world of business and the internationalization of the teachers themselves. “After you are our students: the raw material of a school are the students, and is also this is the final product,” says – “the pair of an excellent faculty, we can recruit the best students at national and international level”. The director also notes the role of the body for non-teaching staff, for the role it has played in the promotion of the school on a daily basis.
the success of The NEW Business School is the articulation of two parts. On the one hand, Daniel Moth highlights the values of old: “are the values of work and of the accuracy with which we prepare our students, respect for knowledge, of thinking rigorously about the world, work very hard and work very hard in lessons and take this work ethic to their professions and to what we want to do.” The director says that the tradition of your institution is also based on the internationalization, first in the faculty, later with the exchange programs, and later with the presence of international students and work with foreign companies.
on the other hand, the faculty of economics of Nova University of Lisbon is also based on a component more modern, a “part a lot more modern to work with students, in an logic to make them understand the technology, the mobility of the means to be able to work with companies,” says Daniel Moth. The junction of these two factors, he says, allows the college to train competent professionals in their place of work and, simultaneously, citizens who find their passion and seek to help transform the world.
The fact that we have risen a few places in the ranking of the best schools, and we are now at the top ex-equo between the Portuguese schools is of course something that makes us happy and what makes us feel that our strategy is on the right path Daniel Moth, director of the NEW School of Business and Economics
A stimulus to the Portuguese higher education
Francisco Veloso and Patrícia Lopes highlighted the fact that Portugal, given its population density and its economic capacity, overtaking other countries in terms of representation in the ranking. The director of the Catholic points to the Germany, regarded as one of the largest and most developed economies of Europe, which only has two schools in the list of Financial Times. “This aspect is very positive and very important because it shows the ability and the potential that the Portuguese universities have been able to have, with work, dedication and commitment, in terms of international recognition,” he adds.
To Daniel Moth, the presence of these faculties in the ranking of the Financial Times has two meanings. In the first place, the director of the NEW SBE asserts that this distinction demonstrates that the country has “excellent” business schools, capable of doing a good job. In the second place, Daniel Moth highlights the cooperation of “healthy” between the institutions, that is, “the ability of these schools to compete on the one hand, but on the other hand to share and cooperate when it is necessary to increase the power of Portugal as a hub of business schools”.
The ranking from the Financial Times evaluates the 90′s best colleges in the field of Economy and Management, covering five products: MBA full time; MBA part time; Open Programs of training for executives, Custom Programs of executive education and master’s degree in Management. This year, the list is headed by London Business School, followed by HEC Paris and Insead (France).
