Plastic bags are likely to cost more than 10 cents – Daily News – Lisbon

Plastic bags “light” taking from Sunday a 10-cent fee, can be sold to consumers in supermarkets, bookstores, pharmacies or even building materials stores for a higher value.

The decision to tax plastic bags to eight cents, two VAT, totaling 10 cents, is part of the Green Taxation and resulted from the efforts of the Minister of Environment, Jorge Moreira da Silva, who has insisted on the need for reduce pollution of this product, especially at sea, following guidelines of the European Union.

Consumers can, however, have to pay more than 10 cents of contribution, if traders decide to pass on the price bag on customers.

Plastic bags “light”, with wings, are best used in hypermarkets and supermarkets to transport food, but also for packing books, medicines, car parts or building materials .

The clear bags, with or without wings, to bring food sold in bulk, such as fruit or meat, are not covered by the new rate.
