According to statistics of transport activity, today released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), between January and March, the number of entries vessels in national ports increased 3.2% (3.1% in the fourth quarter of 2014), with the freight traffic to total 20.5 million tons (9.9%, in line with 10.3% the previous three months).
The port of Sines was the most increased activity (23%), followed by the Figueira da Foz (17.9%) and Leixões (7.3%), while Lisbon and Setúbal decreased 6.4% and 6% respectively.
Goods transported by train reached 2.7 million tons, representing an increase of 11.1% (11.5% in the fourth quarter of 2015) and set the busiest freight and mail by air totaled 36,700 tons, which means an annual increase of 6.8% (10.2% in the previous quarter).
The road freight transport remained negative trend, but less marked than in the fourth quarter of 2014 (-6.2%), influenced by the international component which decreased 20.8% and absorbed the slight recovery of the national transport (0.6 %).
