David Neeleman was at the Web Summit and took the opportunity to expose their grievances in the face of the lack of space in the airport of Lisbon which, in his view, conditions the growth of the TAP. The shareholder called on the Government to quickly resolve the problem, suggesting to download the ‘budget’ for the Montijo.
The journalist Nuno Serra Fernandes listened to the complaints of David Neeleman about the lack of a second airport in Lisbon
“we Have to strengthen our ‘hub’ [base of operations] of Lisbon. I’m a little frustrated with the airport that is not open more space. We are growing faster than the airport and this is very important for the country,” said the businessman to reporters, after an intervention in the Web Summit in Lisbon.
David Neeleman stressed that it wants to open more routes, “go back to Toronto and to Montreal (Canada)”, to get to more secondary cities in the United States, in the northeast of Brazil and in Africa, but the airport must grow too.
“we can’t grow if we say that it is limited, we have to open another airport. The Montijo is there, we can’t wait three years for this to happen, the ‘low cost’ [low cost airlines] can go there and we stay here [at the airport Humberto Delgado], but it has to happen faster than is being done,” he said, noting that, currently, the biggest concern of the TAP is that the airport does not grow at the same rate that the airline company.
The owner of the carrier, the brazilian airline Azul said it has already talked about the theme (together with its Portuguese partner, the ‘boss’ of the Barraqueiro, Humberto Pedrosa] with the minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Pedro Marques, and was available to “work together” in a solution.
he also said that “the country needs economic development through tourism, which represents 10 to 15% of the GDP [Gross Domestic Product],” noting that there are a lot more americans to come to Portugal now.
“we Know that they spend more money than someone who comes in Ryanair paying 39 euros. (…) I can say that can not grow because there is more space, we have to work fast to resolve this situation” because “the TAP is ready to grow again.”
Before, David Neeleman has participated as a speaker at the Web Summit, with the theme of ‘Low fares vs. budget’ (low rates vs. low-cost carriers), and his experience in the world of aviation, highlighting that “the airports have to be more efficient” and should not have cost was too high.
“Are an economic engine that must be encouraged”, he stressed.
Victory Trump is “interesting”
David Neeleman took the view that the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the united states is “interesting”, but has some concerns in relation to the impact of protectionism.
The shareholder believes that “the american people are tired of the way you do the things of the politicians and wanted someone outside to start making new things”, but said that is not “nervous”.
“I Think it will be interesting to see the changes. I am very curious, but I think that’s not going to be bad,” said the businessman, assuming, however some concern about a possible excess of protectionism.
“The United States has always been a very open country, we must see if let’s not go in this path to protect others, we must have a more open economy”, she stressed.
