The unions and the government continue without a solution to stop the four-day strike at TAP, between Christmas and the New Year. After a meeting of long hours on Monday, the union platform representing workers sent a proposal to the Government in order to suspend the privatization, and the protests.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, unions report that, “following the Government’s proposal for the creation of a working group, the unions platform presente d to the Government a memorandum seeking the suspension of the privatization process and the called strike for days 27 to 30 December this year. “

The position of the unions comes after they were received last Friday, the Minister of Economy and the Secretary of State for Transport. At that meeting, the government proposed that a working group be established to involve employees in the privatization process, which was relaunched in mid-November.

On leaving the meeting, Pires Lima said he expected “a response from the union platform of TAP as the proposal” on Monday. These statements led to believe that the proposal of the Executive would be enough for the unions to decide whether kept or canceling the strike. However, the statement sent by the platform shows that there will be more negotiations.

It is unclear, however, which claims entered in the memo sent to the Government. One of the demands of the unions spent for maintenance, for some years, the company agreements, although the company is about to change hands.

But what the statement reveals is still that unions remain focused on suspension privatization of the group, which provides, in a first stage, the disposition of 66% of capital. However, the intention is that the state exit entirely in the medium-term business, with the sale of the remaining 34% within two years after the signing of the sales contract.

The strike was scheduled for 27, 28, 29 and 30 December, a peak period in the operation at TAP, since it had about 120,000 bookings for these dates . The company estimates that each day of the strike at this time means a loss of eight million euros.
