The supermarket chain Pingo Doce, the Jerónimo Martins, was fined for Food Safety and Economic Authority (ASAE) in 500 thousand euros due to the sale at a loss of some products, said Wednesday source of the Ministry of Economy Lusa. The company will contest the fine.
The Economy Minister António Pires de Lima said today in parliament that the performance of the ASAE changed, becoming “less gala on being strong with the weak” and “stronger with the strong” and gave the example of one half a million euros fine imposed on a large distribution company.
When questioned by Lusa, ministry official source said that it was the Pingo Doce and that the fine has to do with “selling a loss of some products.”
Pingo Doce was surprised by the fine and appealed the decision, he told Lusa official source of the supermarket chain Jerónimo Martins.
“We confirm that the ASAE fined Pingo Doce with a fine of 500,000 euros for allegedly selling at a loss. The decision surprises us because we are convinced that we observed and comply with the law and act, moreover, with the express consent of our suppliers, with whom we celebrated agreements to that end, “said an official source of Jerónimo Martins.
“impugn therefore this decision,” he added.
“The transactions in question were allocated to the campaign of the 1st May 2014, that our partners have joined in view the objective of generating a day of strong sales and relevant opportunities for our customers, “concluded the same source.
The law on restrictive trade practices individual (PIRC), which prohibits sales at a loss, has been in place for over a year, since February 2014.
In March last when asked about the ERIP, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jerónimo Martins, Pedro Soares dos Santos, he said that the law did not benefit anyone and “unprotected them (suppliers) smaller.”
