The nights spent by tourists in Portuguese hotels rose 11.4% in the first half, compared to the same period last year to 19.5 million, indicates the National Statistics Institute (INE).
As for the number of guests increased by 12.1% between January and June, for a total of 7.1 million individuals, show the numbers of tourist activity in the first half.
In this same period, were the nights spent by residents in Portugal which have increased over the same period of 2013, an increase of 11.9% rising to 5.4 million.
Still, the non-resident tourists continue to be largely responsible for total overnight stays in the Portuguese hotel establishments with more than 14 million nights in the first half. This number represents an increase of 11.2% over the same period in 2013
In contrast, the average stay of tourists between January and June decreased slightly over the same period of 2013, down 0, 6% to an average of 2.74 nights per guest.
Spain was the country that originated more overnight stays in the first half, with a 22.5% growth in the number of nights spent by those resident in Spanish territory. France, UK and Germany also had significant growth, respectively 13.2%, 12.4% and 11%.
Already registered total revenues in the first half of the year increased 12.1% to a total of € 894.4 million, while revenues from accommodation rose by 12.8% for a total of EUR 615.9 million.
In turn, also the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) rose by a total of 8.8% to 26.9 euros.
Given the distribution of overnight stays by regions of the country, according to the INE, the increase was global, but was higher in the Alentejo (16.8%), Lisbon (14.5%) and Algarve (13.1%).
In relation to the data for June, overnight stays increased by 8.6% over the same month of 2013, but the increase was smaller than the change obtained in May from 12.8%.
In this period, the nights spent by residents increased by 6.7% (18% in May), while the non-resident tourists increased by 9.3% (11.2% in May).
“Notable trends observed in overnight stays in hotels (16.7%), the tourist apartments (15.3%) and hotels (10%), the latter having secured 61.9% the total overnight stays (61.1% in June 2013) “, further informs the INE.
