Deco warns that invoices for periods longer than six months can not be paid

The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection warned that many consumers have received invoices where services are charged for more than six months, stressing that the right to receive these invoices prescribe after six months of its provision.

The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (Deco) issued a statement this Tuesday, May 12, to warn of the fact that it received several contacts from consumers who say they have approved utility bills essential as water, electricity, gas or telecommunications, where are charged “high figures for consumption and bills already several months and even years.”

Deco explains that these consumers can reject the payment of these same bills whenever they are related to consumption made for more than six months.

“We caution that the right to receive the price of the service provided shall lapse six months after its delivery,” explains the Deco before adding that “consumers may object to the payment of these amounts, expressly invoking the prescription and requesting the annulment of the required amounts.”

According to associção, the prescription must be invoked by the holder the contract with the company providing the service “in writing, by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, taking the copy of the letter and keeping the shipping records.” DECO states that consumers can use to “sample letter” available on the website of the association.
