The finance minister, Joaquim Levy said today (3) that Brazil needs to adjust the economy in the direction of the industry. Levy was speaking in Paris, to attend the signing of an agreement between Brazil and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He said the country should reduce uncertainty about the economy with fiscal strengthening and tax simplification. For Levy, the agreement with the OECD, an organization that conducts studies and research in various areas, it may help to achieve these goals.
“At this point, we may have a little less protagonism of commodity [commodities with international prices], which means that we will have more prominence in the manufacturing industry, on the part of knowledge. We have to adjust the economy in that direction. We also have to create the advantages that come from less uncertainty about the economy. The agreement with OECD will in this respect, a more mature economy, who knows what has to compete on the international stage, “said the minister in an interview in Paris.
The Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, who also attended the signing, said that the agreement allows the participation of Brazil in more institutional character, in OECD committees. “We will, over the next two years, increase participation. Already participated in 14 or 15 engines committees. [With the agreement] will explore the possibility of closer cooperation, taking advantage of the OECD experience in all matters discussed, “he said.
Mauro Vieira stressed that the agreement will provide financial burden to Brazil, already that only members-full OECD, currently 34 countries, should make this kind of contribution. Both Vieira as Levy proved cautious when asked about possible integration of Brazil to the organization as a member-full. “With this macro agreement, we will have the opportunity to be present more institutional form, learn more about the experience and see what must we do at the end of this assessment period,” said Brazilian Foreign Minister.
Joaquim Levy also said the projections released today by the OECD for the Brazilian economy. The Commission predicts recession in 2015 and growth of 1.1% of the economy in 2016. According to the Minister of Finance, estimates are close to market forecasts. “The first quarter was shrinking, the second quarter will still be relatively difficult. What we are doing is working to have a recovery [of the economy] as quickly as possible, “he said.
