ATHENS (Reuters) – Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis proposed Saturday that the mechanism rescue of Europe (ESM, its acronym in English) offers a new 30-year loan to Athens for the country to buy back government bonds worth 27 billion euros held by the European Central Bank.

This would allow Greece to pay to the ECB 6.7 billion euros that are to expire in July and August, and lengthen repayment on the remaining debt.

Varoufakis told Realnews newspaper that a solution would be ” a loan of 30 years with relatively low interest rates (1.5 percent) of the ESM for Greece “.

These reimbursements are ahead of the 1.6 billion euros that must pay the IMF by the end June. The Greek government is negotiating with international creditors to avoid a default
