Lisbon rises in the ranking of cities with the highest demand from international visitors at this year’s Global Destinations Cities Index, MasterCard. The capital occupies the 35th place in the overall table and climbs a place in the European table, to 14th position.
According to the data provided by Mastercard, increased demand for Lisbon increased by 4.9% compared to 2014 data, having fixed in 3,564,041 international visitors 2015 against 3,397,255 the previous year.
The expenditure incurred by foreigners in Lisbon decreased 0.3%, while spending per visitor decreased from 541 (490.9 euros) to $ 515 (about 467 3 euros).
These data are based on a comparison of corresponding periods 2014-2015 (January-May), and forecasts for the remainder of the year, based on the evolution of the remaining months of 2014.
Comparing the number of international visitors expected this year with 2009, there has been a city of demand increase of around 8.3%, although this is not reflected in tourism revenues, had a break 4%.
“Lisbon continues to progress steadily in this ranking as a major European city within the framework of the most popular destinations for international visitors for leisure and business,” concludes Paul Raposo, Country Manager of MasterCard in Portugal .
London, leading city in this ranking, recorded a total of 18,815,185 international visitors (+ 6% more than in 2014) and revenues of 20,250 million dollars, about 18, EUR 37 billion (+ 2.3%). However, tourists were more reserved with regard to costs, having been a reduction of the average costs per person of 1,114 dollars (about 1010.90 Euro) to $ 1,075 (about 975.5 EUR) .
Bangkok follows in second place in the ranking and features, in 2015, a total of 18,242,528 international visitors – 8% more than in the previous year – who spent 12 361 million (+ 11 8%), which represents an average expenditure per person of $ 678 (about 615.25 euros).
This study also revealed the latest trends in world tourism. The Asia / Pacific continues to rely on half the cities in the top 10 ranking, reflecting its potential. Already London, Paris, Istanbul, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Rome leading the choices of tourists in Europe. Lima, Peru, was ahead of Mexico City and Sao Paulo, consolidating its preferred target position in Latin America.
But the Dubai occupies the 4th place in the overall table, positioning itself as the chosen destination for tourists who choose to go to the Middle East and Africa. In North America stands out New York on the 6th place in the overall ranking
