NSI: Sleeps continued to grow in December
According to preliminary data published yesterday by the INE – National Institute of Statistics, hotels registered 2.1 million overnight stays in December 2014, representing an annual growth of 15.5% (+ 11.4% in November).
The increases for both residents and non-residents were similar (+ 15.5% and + 15.4%) and foreign markets represented 61.4% of the total. Overnight stays of residents (808,800) increased by 15.5% over the previous month (+ 5.9%) and in line with October (+ 14.8%). The average stay was 2.33 nights (+ 0.7%) and the net rate of bed occupancy 26.1% (+2.5 pp).
At the regional level were presented notable increases of total overnight stays in December. The INE stress es the Azores region for the second consecutive month shows an increase of + 23.1% overnight stays in December (+ 26.0% in November). In the north and center of Portugal growths were also notorious (+ 19.2% and + 18.6% respectively), higher than in November (+ 8.6% and + 2.3%). The regions most in demand were Lisbon (31.1% of total overnight stays), Algarve (19.0%) and Wood (17.5%).
Residents overnight stays increased by 22.1% and 19.9% in the Centre and North. Same trend has occurred in other areas but to a lesser degree. The exception was the wood with -4.5% (-1.9% in November). North, Lisbon and Center were the main destinations of residents (26.7%, 24.9% and 23.1% respectively). In terms of nights spent by non-residents, the Azores registered the largest increase (+ 41.9%), however short of the previous month (+ 52.3%). Followed by Lisbon and North, with similar developments (+ 18.9% and + 18.2% respectively).
According to INE data, in December 201 4 the ten main markets accounted for 77.1% of nights spent by non-residents (75.7% in December 2013). The UK market grew by 9.5% in terms of overnight stays of its residents, less than in the previous month (+ 14.5%). This market accounted for 18.2% in December. The number of German guests of overnight stays, with a relative weight of 14.8% in the last month of the year increased 28.2% (+ 16.6% in November). Spain recovered from the previous month (-9.0%) with + 12.0% in December. The French, Dutch and Brazilian markets also showed significant increases (+ 21.3%, + 20.0% and + 16.8% respectively). The Holland Guest nights varied little (+ 0.7%). Italy and Belgium recorded the largest increases in December (+ 46.7% and + 41.8%).
According to preliminary data from the INE, in December the net rate of bed occupancy stood at 26.1% (+2.5 pp, compared with +1.9 pp in November). Hotels maintained the highest growth in occupancy rates (+3.3 percentage points in December, do wn from +2.4 pp in November). To highlight the five hotels and four stars who held the highest values of this indicator (32.3% and 31.2% respectively). The highest increase in net occupancy rate of bed occurred in the three star hotels (+3.8 pp).
