More than 800,700 million euros (900,000 million dollars) can be generated by 2050 and created 180,000 jobs through the expansion of marine protected areas, says a study published today by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
“Every dollar invested to create marine protected areas allows benefits three times through the creation of direct jobs, coastal protection or fishing,” the WWF said in a statement.
The report, released today on the sidelines of the World Summit Oceans, held in Cascais, is based on studies conducted by UV University of Amsterdam, commissioned by WWF.
According to the study, the economic benefit of increased protection oceans would far exceed the costs, to alleviate the damage caused by the excess of fishing activities, pollution and other factors relating to the environment.
Researchers estimate that can be generated between 490,000 million and 920,000 million dollars ( between 435 470 million and 8180.00 million) over the next 35 years through the expansion of marine protected areas, a process also likely to create between 150 000 and 180 000 jobs.
