Austrian far-right contest elections – Observer

The Austrian far-right party contested the result of the presidential elections held on 22 May. The Party candidate Freedom (FPO), Norbert Hofer lost to the ecologist party candidate Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen by just 31,000 votes.

According to a spokesman of the Constitutional Court, the Freedom party argues that the election process was fraught with irregularities, especially in postal votes, which were 700,000 for a total of 4.6 million.

Van der Bellen won with 50.3% of votes, while Hofer reached 49.7%. To appeal to the Constitutional Court, the Freedom Party can achieve a partial recount of the vote.

The party leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, will give a press conference on Wednesday morning.
