Mercadona supermarket opens in Portugal – NiT New in Town (Description)

The largest food distributor in Spain is coming to Portugal. The Mercadona, a kind of Pingo Doce Spanish, will open four stores in the country by 2019. This is the first international brand that was founded in 1977.

“Portugal is a great opportunity for start the international growth of the company, and a country with which we can learn as much with consumers as with the highly competitive sector of distribution, “says Juan Roig, the president, in a statement here quoted by Mad Money.

For now it is not known in which localities will find supermarkets. In Spain, Mercadona has more than 1,500 stores and employs 76,000 people . According to the same statement the investment in Portugal shall be EUR 25 million and will result in the creation
