Mercadona supermarket opens in Portugal – NiT New in Town (Description)

The largest food distributor in Spain is coming to Portugal. The Mercadona, a kind of Pingo Doce Spanish, will open four stores in the country by 2019. This is the first international brand that was founded in 1977.

“Portugal is a great opportunity for start the international growth of the company, and a country with which we can learn as much with consumers as with the highly competitive sector of distribution, “says Juan Roig, the president, in a statement here quoted by Mad Money.

For now it is not known in which localities will find supermarkets. In Spain, Mercadona has more than 1,500 stores and employs 76,000 people . According to the same statement the investment in Portugal shall be EUR 25 million and will result in the creation of 200 jobs in the first phase. According to the Business Journal, this is not the first time the Spanish giants includes Portugal in their expansion plans – took place in 2012
