Banks expect slight increase in demand for credit by companies … – LUSA

Portuguese banks expect that there is a “slight increase” in demand for loans by businesses and households in the second quarter of this year, according to the results of a survey published today by the Bank of Portugal.

The banking supervisor today released the Survey of Bank Lending Market, a document which reflects the survey results made at the end of the first quarter to five banks operating in Portugal on the offer and demand for credit.

For the second quarter, “banks anticipate a slight increase in loan demand by enterprises, which should be mainly associated with SMEs [small and medium enterprises], for all kind of maturity. In the case of individuals, the majority of the participating institutions perspetivam a slight increase in demand both for house purchase or for consumption and other purposes, “reads the document.

Between April and June , “the credit granting criteria to non-financial private sector should remain broadly unchanged, but may be mild decrease in tightening in loans to both SMEs and also to large companies,” he added.

Now the results for the first quarter indicate that there was a “maintenance of global demand for loans in the corporate segment and a slight growth in the private sector.”

In addition, between January and March, “the criteria for granting credit and the conditions applied in loans or credit lines to enterprises and households remained practically unchanged, “the Bank of Portugal.

Still, the segment of companies and individuals” continued to verificar- a reduction of the ‘spreads’ [margin] applied in average loans, “stressed the organization led by Carlos Costa.
