The leader of the parliamentary BE said today that the data on the deficit of the first semester revealed today by the National Statistics Institute (INE) for “the narrative” of the “impoverishment” of the “parties of the right”.
Pedro Filipe Soares also underlined that “the deficit is not an end in itself” and, “using a phrase already beat, there is life beyond the deficit”, since “the public accounts should be to respond to the life of the people”, in statements to journalists in the parliament.
“The narrative that had been created by the parties of the right (PSD/CDS) that it was by the impoverishment of the country that we would be able to balance the public accounts is disproved when, after we restored the salaries of the public function, unfrozen pensions and increased social support, we were able to have a budget execution better than the 2015″
The general government deficit was 2.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first half of this year, a decrease compared to the 4,6% recorded in the same period last year, according to the INE.

Despite the reduction in year-onyear checked, the value of the deficit up to June, from 2.8% of GDP, is above the Government’s goal for this year, which is 2.2%, and is also slightly above the estimate presented by the Technical Unit for Budgetary Support (UTAO), whose central value was 2.7% deficit in the first half of the year.
