Six Portuguese researchers received millions in grants from the European Research Council (ERC, acronym in English) in the amount of 8.2 million euros, announced on Thursday the European Commission. The ERC grants allow scientists to create their teams and carry out their projects. In all, 325 scientists now won these scholarships, totaling 485 million euros.
The funding allocated to Portuguese researchers amounts to values between 1.1 and 1.6 million euros. The four scientists working in Portugal received grants in several areas: Miguel Cardina, the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, will study the wars of liberation of former colonies; Ana Patricia Carvalho, University of Minho, will devote himself to stochastic systems in the field of mathematics; Joaquim Gaspar, Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon, will look old nautical charts; Francisco Freire, Centre for Research in Anthropology Network, will study the political, social activism and Islamic militancy in the western region of the Sahara Desert.
Outside, Beatriz Barahona Pena Viçoso, who works at the Institute Science and Technology of Austria, will study what impact has the morphological differences between males and females in the evolution of the genome of animals. And Bruno Correia, who works at the Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Switzerland, will work in computational construction of new proteins in the important area for the immune system.
The grants were awarded under Horizon 2020. Created in 2007, ERC grants have funded more than 6,500 researchers.
