Ford Motor Co. announced this Tuesday the withdrawal of investment of 15-20 million euros for the creation of a new factory in Mexico, opting for the production of vehicles of dimensions more reduced in the factory that it already has in the neighboring country, and investing before 665 million in its factory in Michigan, United States.
last month, the chief executive officer, Mark Fields stated it would be willing to work with the future administration of Trump, but it was too late to drop out of the new factory in Mexico.
"That there are no misconceptions about this – Ford is a manufacturer of cars global, but our home is here in the United States," said this Tuesday at the press conference in which, surprisingly, announced that, after all, gave up the plan.
In place to build a new factory in San Luis Potosi, Ford will perform the production of the new Focus at the factory which already has in Hermosillo. Up to here the Focus was produced in Wayne, Michigan, and the shift of production of the model for Mexico remains the same, although to an existing factory.
Part of the investment Ford is, however, diverted to the north american factory, where it will create 700 jobs associated with the production of new electric models, including a hybrid-electric version of the classic Mustang and the Lincoln Continental.
The announcement occurred after the course of the last year, Donald Trump has criticized the plan for the investment of Ford in Mexico and only hours after the President-elect has accused his main rival, General Motors, to sell in the United States-made cars in the neighbouring country without paying for it customs fees.
"General Motors is sending cars model Chevy Cruze manufactured in Mexico for sellers the north-american free of customs charges. Manufactured in the United States of America, or to pay heavy customs fees," wrote Trump on Twitter.
General Motors reacted by stating that the greater part of the vehicles, the Chevy Cruze are manufactured in the United States, only coming from the Mexico versions hatchback, which correspond to a small percentage of the vehicles sold.
