The consumption of electricity in Portugal reached a daily highest of six years. The maximum was registered on 19 January, surpassing the previous maximum recorded in January 2011.
The consumption of electricity in Portugal was thus the 169 gigawatts hour on day 19. This consumption was stocked with 46% of renewable 22% coal and 26% natural gas in combined cycle power plants.
this Was also the day that the consumption of natural gas reached the highest value ever recorded in Portugal: 252,4 gigawatts hour (GWh), divided by 103,2 GWh to produce electricity, and 149,2 GWh by households and businesses.
The natural gas terminal of REN in Sines reached the maximum of their capacity of injection of natural gas in the network on the 12th of January, “reflecting the increase in the consumption of natural gas in Portugal that resulted from the cold wave that has been sweeping the country and the needs of electricity production.
This terminal reached 100% of its capacity injection into the network, having been responsible for 89% of the national consumption of energy in the day.
REN underlines that these maximum consumption of electricity and natural gas demonstrate the “essential role of the national infrastructure of natural gas in the assurance of supply of consumption, and the electricity sector in particular. These are planned and designed to respond to the demands matching of consumers”.
it Was also this week that the price of electricity in the wholesale market reached the highest value in the space of three years: 98,69 € per megawatt hour.
to contribute to the increase of prices in the market where producers sell their energy to marketing companies, this happens in part by increased demand in France, seen 18 of its nuclear power plants are stopped for maintenance or inspection.
The increase of prices also happens for Portugal to be living in a situation of drought weak, which leads to that the dams produce less power.
