Six million children die every year from preventable causes – Daily Digital

Six million children continue to die in the world every year from causes that are preventable, according to data from UNICEF, the purpose of the Universal Day of the Child, which today points out.

in Spite of the progress achieved in the last decades, UNICEF reminds that children from the poorest households are more than twice as likely to die before the age of five than children of means more and more rich.

they Are almost 385 million children live in extreme poverty and more than 250 million children of primary school age are not attending school or learning.

There are still close to 50 million of the minors who were forced to leave their homes and are currently uprooted.

“The rights of children trapped in areas under siege – particularly in Syria, in Iraq, in northern Nigeria — are even more threatened, as their schools, hospitals and homes have been the target of attacks. At the global level, close to 250 million children live in countries affected by conflict,” said UNICEF in a press release that marks the Universal Day of the Child.

The executive director of UNICEF Portugal stresses that the conflicts, crises, and extreme poverty are “putting the lives and future of millions of children at risk.”

“it Is absolutely necessary to put an end to these violations, investing more to get to the most vulnerable children, or we will pay you the price of a slower growth, greater inequality, and less stability”, says Madalena Marçal Grilo.

In Portugal, UNICEF recognizes the progress achieved since the 1990s, with a special emphasis to the reduction of infant mortality.

But other problems have worsened or persist in recent years, such as child poverty, which affects close to one in four of children in Portugal.

“Are problems of very high concern] and that require policies and concrete measures. The poverty and deprivations in childhood, in the overwhelming majority of cases, affect not only the present children but also their future and the future of society,” said UNICEF Portugal.
