Automobile association disputes the report of environmentalists about fuel consumption – the Public.en

The secretary-general of the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) contested this Wednesday the report of the European Federation for Transport and Environment that points to an average deviation of 42% in fuel consumption compared to the announced by the manufacturers.

"This study is speculative and has no scientific basis," said the Portuguese Hélder Pedro, secretary-general of the Automobile Association of Portugal, referring to the report Mind the Gap, released Wednesday by the European Federation for Transport and Environment, which seeks to demonstrate that cars spend on average 42% more than is advertised by the manufacturers.

"The study is completely precipitated, and without any scientific basis. Now comes to talk in real conditions of driving without to see how they are. Two people drive the same car and one of them may have a style of driving different from the other. Depends on the driver, depends on the state of the vehicle, depends on the route," said Helder Pedro.

To the secretary-general of the ACAP, there is no comparison in technical terms, of the used cars in various brands and therefore, he insists, the report does not have any scientific basis.

"It’s a study without any interest and without any importance. Says that the increase (of consumption) is 40% but even I could tell they were 60% because that is not how things are done," he stressed.

For the responsible brands to comply "strictly" to the current legislation. The report of the European Federation of Transport and Environment is to "enjoy" the discussion that is being developed at this time at the level of community bodies, he added.

Hélder Pedro framed the report in the discussion that will take place in Brussels, at the level of the European Union and provides access to change the mode of tests on new vehicles entering circulation.

This time, he said, there is a european legislation on testing in the laboratory and which allows to compare the consumption levels of the various models to each other.

"In conjunction with the European Union, car manufacturers agree with the change of the european legislation on changes in the form of tests to evolve to the real conditions of driving, so scientific, it is expected that the innovations will be implemented in 2017," said the head of the ACAP.

The study Mind the Gap, of the European Federation of Transport and Environment, organization that integrates the association environmentalist, Portuguese Oak, it concludes that the difference between the actual consumption and the consumption advertised by the manufacturers is increasing.

"the difference between The results (on consumption and CO2 emissions) of the testing laboratory official and the actual performance of the cars has been growing: it increased from 9% in 2001 to 28% in 2012 and 42% in 2015," concludes the study that was released by radio TSF and placed on the page of the federation.

"This report analyzes the differences between the laboratory tests and the actual data relating to CO2 emissions, as well as the levels of consumption of cars", explains the organization, for whom the study demonstrates that the system "failed completely".

"The new vehicles are not as efficient as the manufacturers claim: on the road, the progress on emissions reduction are effectively stopped four years ago. The manufacturers are responsible for the problem when they use gaps in the system and, supposedly, in some cases, illegally use material test defective", accuses the federation.

The organization also indicates that the results are "distorted" disclosed by the marks are "deceptive" for drivers that are not able to save the same amount of fuel that is advertised by the manufacturers.
