Almost three thousand migrants died in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year, the highest number of deaths recorded in such a short period, said Friday the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“This is the third consecutive year that deaths exceed three thousand, but had never been recorded before the end of July, which is very alarming,” said IOM spokesman in Geneva, Joel Millman.
About 90% of these deaths occurred in the central area of the Mediterranean sea, between Libya and Italy.
