The Government led by Matteo Renzi has tried to implement in recent months with a plan of recapitalisation of the bank which involved the entry of new private investors and the cleaning of the balance sheet of the bank of very high volumes of non-performing loans.

however, with the defeat in the referendum held at the weekend and the resignation of the prime minister, the plans were threatened, especially because several of the potential private investors were reluctant to invest in the bank without being sure of what would be the political developments in Italy.
