“I am deeply confident in justice. It was a calumny without foundation, made in 2012 on alleged events that occurred 11 years ago (2003-2004) and I am sure, will be fully investigated,” said Miguel Horta e Costa, a written statement sent today to Lusa agency.
According to the Daily News today, the former president of Portugal Telecom (PT) has been a defendant on Friday the Central Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DCIAP).
Research, says the newspaper, was opened by prosecutors following a letter of request sent by the Brazilian authorities to Miguel Horta e Costa.
In 2012, the Brazilian advertising Maros Valerio, condemned as executor of Mensalão, said the former president of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would have negotiated directly with Miguel Horta e Costa, then president of Portugal Telecom, a payment from the Portuguese operator for his party.
At the time, Horta e Costa soon denied involvement in the case.
Known as Mensalão, this corruption case, which involves buying votes for project approval schemes, marked the Party governments of Workers, then led by Lula da Silva.
