Vatican receives ransom by letters of Michelangelo – Daily News – Lisbon

The Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi, confirmed today an advanced news by the Italian newspaper “Il Messaggero” giving the redemption request account. Confirmed that a cardinal in charge of the Basilica of St. Peter was contacted by someone who was willing to return the documents by “any price” , in his words.

According to the daily Italian, the author of the redemption request and a former official of the Vatican and the value would be 100,000 euros.

Lombardi added that the contacted Cardinal “naturally refused because they are documents stolen “:

One of the missing documents is a letter signed by the artist who painted the Sistine Chapel , designed part of the Basilica of St. Peter and sculpted the Pietà

More details about the theft were however reported by the Vatican. A nun, who gave for their lack, and informed his superiors in 1997. Why the Vatican remained silent about the case in the last 18 years? Lombardi did not explain. He stated, however, that had been stolen two letters instead of one, as advancing the “Il Messaggero”.
