Unemployment in Portugal has signs of a downward trend, with the latest data show both an increase in the employed population between April and June, as a reduction in the number of people without work.
unemployment rate in the second quarter of this year fell to 10.8%, according to information released Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute. The value is 1.1 percentage points lower than in the second quarter of 2015 and is a decrease of 1.6 percentage points from first quarter 2016.
It is also the lowest value observed since the first quarter of 2011, when the INE began using the current methodology. That was also the year in which Portugal called for an international loan, ushering in a period marked by an economic and financial crisis and the stress of climbing unemployment.
The published estimates now indicate a reduction of 12 6% in the unemployed population over the previous quarter (which means 81,000 people) and a decrease of 9.8% over the same period of 2015. in all, there were about 559,000 people unemployed between April and June this year.
Since the employed population had an increase of 2% compared to the previous quarter (89,000 more people employed), and 0.5% compared to the same months of 2015. the total was around . 4.6 million people
the growing number of employees is, however, usual at this time of year, it points out the analysis made by INE: “This increase is common in the second quarters of each year, although with different amplitudes. The increase now found is lower than 2015, similar to 2014 and higher than the 2013, 2012 and 2011 “.
The data also indicate that in the second quarter, 143,000 people were unemployed found work, that they add 24,700 people who were inactive (eg, students, pensioners and people who are not actively seeking employment). Conversely, 78,600 people who had gone to work unemployment, while 137,000 became inactive.
That increase in employment is a phenomenon that tourism is not alien, who has been grow in Portugal and has in the second quarter one of the strongest periods. The Algarve saw the unemployment rate fall from 12.4% in the first quarter to 8.1% in the second, making it the region of the country with least unemployment, something that had never happened in this data series. With 13%, the region of Madeira was the one that registered the highest rate.
The numbers are in line with other indicators that already came to realize lower unemployment. In June, the unemployment rate published monthly by the INE (still provisional and whose methodology is different window now published) was at 11.2%, making that month was the third consecutive stay below the threshold of 12%.
the figures were well received by the Government, which estimates that this year, the unemployment rate down to 11.4%, which means a reduction of one percentage point compared to 12.4% last year .
in response to the data released by Statistics Portugal, Secretary of State for Employment, Miguel Cabrita, expressed satisfaction with the progress indicator, but was cautious in assessing the health of the labor market in Portugal
“There is an economic recovery, is to return to be net job creation and the data are encouraging (…) but are given that the Government does not flag arch,” said Miguel Cabrita, speaking Lusa. “We still have important issues to address in the labor market,” added the minister. “The unemployment rate, standing at this level, which is a very positive level, is a very positive development, but there are still many unemployed people and we must continue to work to lower these levels.”
Of 559,000 unemployed, close to 359,000 (or 64%) were looking for a job for at least two years. There were 65,000 people looking for the first job.
