Portugal external surplus more than tripled to 186.3 million – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

The improvement in the external accounts of Portugal until April was due to the improvement in the balance of goods and services, which is now in surplus and the current account, which was less deficit.

The current and capital account, which measures the flow of payments between Portugal and abroad, reached a surplus of 186.3 million euros in the first four months of this year, compared with 51.1 million in the same period last year.

The data that were revealed on Monday by the Bank of Portugal, in the Statistical Bulletin June, show that the improvement of the Portuguese foreign accounts was due, the positive development of current and, within this, the balance of goods and services.

The current account reached a deficit of 457.1 million euros, down from 891.8 million euros in the same period last year. This relief was due mainly to the behavior of the balance of goods and services, which was lacking in the first four months of 2014 (104.5 million euros) and went on to positive in the same period this year (EUR 260 million).

In the trade in goods with foreign countries, the difference between exports and imports was negative by 2.54 billion euros in the first four months of the year, below the deficit of EUR 2.7 billion of same period.

In the services balance, the surplus reached 2,803 billion in the first four months of the year, up from 2.59 million the same period.

In the balance of capital, the surplus fell from 949.2 to 643.4 million euros.
