Fuels lead inflation to highest since 2012 – the Public.en

price Index of the group of energy products rose 7,41% compared to January 2016

The rate of inflation registered in January a variation of 1.3% in relation to the value registered in the first month of last year. The variation is the highest since December 2012, and reflects in large measure the acceleration in fuel prices.

To disclose on Friday the estimate of the value of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the National Institute of Statistics (INE) note how this variation is mainly due to rise in fuel, which is confirmed when looking to the so-called "underlying inflation". This indicator measures inflation excluding the unprocessed food and energy – and where the annual variation is only around 0,5%, the same value as that recorded in December.

In the clothing and footwear, accessories, household equipment and current maintenance of housing, as well as on the content of the health products there was a decline compared to January of last year. Opposite trend to that observed in the index of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, alcoholic drinks and tobacco, communications, education, restaurants and leisure segment, and culture.

The annual variation in the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) was 1.3%, when the value estimated by Eurostat for the euro zone is 1.8%. As for December, the monthly variation was 0.7%.
