Four military POLICE and 14 civilians tried for corruption in Portalegre – Observer

Four soldiers of the national guard, including a superior officer, and 14 civilians begin on the Monday morning to be judged, in Portalegre, by corruption, receiving undue advantage, abuse of power and tax fraud. The trial will be held in the congress centre of the Chamber of the pipes, due to the high number of stakeholders, including defendants, lawyers and witnesses, said to the Lusa agency judicial resources.

The first arrests have been made, on the 19th of January 2016, in the district of Portalegre, in sequence, an "investigation conducted exclusively" by the GNR, through the Unity of Action of the Tax, and coordinated by the Public Ministry (MP), through the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Évora.

According to the indictment of the prosecutor, that the Lusa had access, between the military of the GNR arrested include a lieutenant colonel who played roles in the Territorial Command of Portalegre, a cable that exercised in the Fiscal position of Elvas, and two guards of the Detachment of Traffic of Portalegre.

Three soldiers of the national guard, including the lieutenant-colonel, all in custody, are accused of passive bribery, receiving undue advantage and abuse of power, among other crimes, and another element of the Guard, in liberty, is accused of abuse of power. A calendar, also in custody, is pronounced for active bribery and 13 other persons for offences of bribery and receiving undue advantage and two of them respond by the practice of the crime of tax fraud.

In the indictment, it is stated that the investigation found that the military obtained the advantages in cash and in various products donated by merchants of the region in exchange for favors or to avoid inspections to their premises.
